Clongeen GAA 1905-2010
Having been formed in 1905 principally by Thomas Kelly (High St.), Michael Hickey (Garryrichard) and John Butler NT (Newbawn) the club received a major boost with the arrival of Fr. Edmond Wheeler as a curate in the parish. Fr. Wheeler was a member of the famous four in a row Wexford Senior Football team 1915-1918. While hurling and football remained strong in the parish with numerous district titles, the first adult county title was recorded in junior football in 1970 with victory over Buffers Alley following a replay. In 1972 our Junior B footballers won the county title.
Rackard league successes were recorded by Clongeen NS in 1976, 1980 and 1997 and many of the current adult players received their training and coaching by Mr John Cullen, former principal of the school.
Victories in the Jim Byrne Cup followed by U-21 football premier title with Adamstown. In 1999 Clongeen defeated Duffry Rovers to win their first ever U-21 title as a single parish.
The mid eighties were memorable by reason of the fact that Clongeen won the county junior hurling final in 1986 and followed in 1987 with a county intermediate football title with a four point win over St. Josephs.
While there have been many milestones in the clubs history we recorded our greatest success on 2007 when we beat the Starlight’s in the county senior football final for our first ever senior title in our twenty years as a senior football club. In the same year we also win the Junior D football County Final and the B championship in the Junior hurling.
Another wonderful year followed in 2008 this time in hurling when we beat Craanford in the Junior Hurling County Final. The team progressed to reach the Leinster final losing out to Tullogher-Rosbercan of Kilkenny after a marvellous game of hurling. The Wexford team went to the All-Ireland Football semi-final the following year where they lost out narrowly to Tyrone backed by a strong representation from Clongeen. The club also hosted RTE as part of the All-Star celebrations in October 2008.
Ladies football and camogie are also keeping the flag flying with some marvellous wins the highlight being the Intermediate County Football Final and many underage successes.
The club has been well served by dedicated personnel over its long history. The voluntary support of loyal members has been the strength of the club through the years. We are deeply indebted to many for financial support and in particular our generous sponsors Mythen Construction.
